Scholarships for African American Women
Last Updated on January 16, 2024 by Lori Pace
We’re repeatedly told that ‘Google is your friend,’ so finding scholarships for African American or black women could be easy. People may forget that as women, moms, and especially single moms, time is the one thing you don’t have access to!
We’ve done some of the leg work for you with that in mind. As it turns out, there are many people dedicated to helping you find the scholarship you want.
Cast your eye here and see what catches your attention.
Benefits of a scholarship
- It’s a monetary gift that does not need to be paid back.
- Thousands are available, and many are allocated to women and other minority groups.
- Various non-profits and organizations, and major employers offer exclusively African American women.
That’s a good start.
What you might need to qualify
To apply for most scholarships, you will need the following things:
1. Grades and transcripts
Most require a minimum GPA for consideration
2. Essay
You may be asked to write a letter explaining why you deserve the award
3. Letters of recommendation
Some applications could ask you to give letters of recommendation from former employers and others who have experienced you in an educational or professional arena.
4. Other financial aid
You may be asked to prove that you do not have access to any other financial support for need-based scholarships.

The list of ‘our team’ starts here!
BestColleges.com
This crew gets it; in their opening paragraph of this page, they state:
- There’s a gap in diversity in enrollment rates
- African American students account for only 14% of the overall admission
On this same page, you will have access to various online resources, including:
- How to apply for a scholarship
- Scholarship tips
- Outline of application do’s and don’ts
They then list more than 15 scholarships specifically earmarked for African Americans in various categories.
Scholarships.com
On the home page of their site, they state: Free college scholarship search – find FREE money for College. Search over 3.7 million college scholarships and grants. About $19 billion in financial aid to help you pay for college.
Sounds promising, right?

Did you know that there are 105 historically black colleges and universities in the USA? These are both private and public schools offering 2-year and 4-year institutions.
On this page, you’ll find specifics on the various funds targeted at African Americans with details of how to apply, who to apply with. Requirements to be eligible – there’s a lot of words, granted, but if you can train your brain to work through some of it – you’ll find there’s gold there!
On the same site, you’ll be able to read about assistance for single mothers. Scroll right to the bottom of this page, and you’ll find ‘Financial aid resources for women and mothers.’

I loved their 5-tips to help you win a scholarship and the full article which appeared here:
Consider historically black colleges and universities (touched on above)
- Submit the free application for federal aid
- Apply for minority scholarship awards
- Find specific scholarships related to your goals
- Stay organized and submit by the deadline
Right under this list, they go on to detail 328 scholarships available for black women valued @ $2million. Worth checking out this site.
Watch the Yard
With the heading ‘every black single mother should have this list of college scholarships,’ we had to pay attention. There are at least eight different scholarship programs covering topics such as:
- Accounting
- Restaurateurs
- Legal
- Business
As they clearly say here: “these scholarships could change a single mother’s life.”
Going, Merry
Going Merry is a free Scholarship and financial aid platform as explained by themselves. On this page, they say, ‘while you may prefer to zoom in on one aspect of your yourself life race, remember you may qualify for sponsorships; for all sorts of reasons!’
They list a range of 27 scholarships that range in dollar amounts from $100 to around $40 000.
They give you a few options. Each of the scholarships is linked directly from their site, so you can click on one or ALL of them and apply straight away. Alternately sign up onto their platform and allow them to match with other sponsorship opportunities over and above the ones they’ve listed.
Ending by saying, whoever route you go, you’ve got this. I reckon they’re right.
In Conclusion
There are additional articles on this blog that may be of interest to you, topics such as:

All this information may seem daunting; this article intends to break this down into bite-size chunks. Whatever resonates with you, focus there. The good news is that there is help out there, and you deserve the help.
