Disability Housing Grants For Veterans
Last Updated on September 1, 2023 by Lori Pace
Housing grants are available from the US Department of Veteran Affairs for Veterans and Service Members with certain service-connected disabilities. They allow them to buy or modify a home that meets their needs and enable them to live independently. You might need to make modifications to your home, such as installing ramps or widening doors. Learn how to apply for a disability housing grant and if you are eligible as veterans.

If you are able to use the grant money to purchase, build or modify your permanent home (a place you intend to live in for a very long time), you may be eligible for an SAH grant. Given that you own or will own the home you’re planning to modify and if you have a qualifying service-connected disability.
The qualifying service-connected disabilities include the following:
- Loss or impairment of multiple limbs
- Loss or loss of lower leg use and residual effects of an organic (natural), disease or injury
- Blindness in both eyes (20/200 or less visual acuity)
- Some severe burns
- After September 11, 2001, the loss or impairment of one lower extremity (foot, leg) means that you are unable to balance or move without braces, crutches or canes.
A grant that is based on the loss or destruction of one extremity following September 11, 2001 can only be granted to 120 veterans and service personnel each fiscal year (FY). The fiscal year is from October 1 to September 30. You may be eligible for a grant in the future if you are not able to get it in the current fiscal years.
How much funding does an SAH grant offer?
You can receive up to $109 986 for FY 2023 if you are eligible for an SAH grant. This is the maximum amount that SAH grants can be granted at this time.
Do You Have To Use The Total Grant Amount This Year
No. You can use the money you receive from an SAH grant or SHA grant up to six times during your lifetime if you are eligible.
You can use as much of your grant or as little as you need depending on what adaptations you require and the bid from the builder. You can always use more money from the grant if you don’t use all of it.
Based on construction costs, we may adjust the maximum amount each year. The grant may allow you to receive the maximum amount allowed for the year that you have used it.
Grants For Veterans Eligibility For A Temporary Home
Can I get money to change a family member’s home where I’m living?
If you meet these two requirements, you may be eligible for a Temporary Resident Adaptation (TRA) grant. You must be eligible for an SAH grant or SHA grant. You should also be temporarily living in the home of a relative who needs to be modified to suit your needs. However, you don’t need to be the owner of the house in order to receive a TRA grant.
How much funding does a TRA grant offer?
- You can receive up to $44,299 through TRA grants if you are eligible for an SAH grant.
- You can receive up to $7,910 from the TRA grant program for FY 2023 if you are eligible for an SHA grant.
