South Dakota Single-Parent Assistance Programs
SOUTH DAKOTA NEED-BASED GRANT PROGRAM (SDNBGP)
As a single mother who successfully returned to school, I can attest to the value of the SOUTH DAKOTA NEED-BASED GRANT PROGRAM (SDNBGP). This program offers vital scholarships for single mothers like me who aspire to continue their education. To qualify, you must complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), a crucial step in the process. The awards vary from $500 to $2000 per student, providing essential financial support.
For further guidance and information, you can reach out to the SD Board of Regents at (605) 773-3455 or via email at info@sdbor.edu.
Women, Infants & Children (WIC) for Single Mothers
As a single mother who has personally benefited from the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, I can attest to its importance for single mothers and their children, especially infants and toddlers, from low-income families in South Dakota. This program not only provides valuable nutrition advice but also assists in purchasing healthy and nutritious food from stores. Eligible families also receive referrals to clinics, doctors, and community service agencies, enhancing overall well-being.
To apply for WIC, simply reach out to a WIC clinic in your county or area, or if you have questions or concerns, you can contact them at (605) 773-3361 or 1-800-738-2301.
SNAP Food Assistance for Single Mothers
South Dakota also offers SNAP or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It’s a great source of food assistance for low-income households.
However, you’ll need to check the eligibility requirements so that you won’t have a hard time applying for the program. Eligibility is based on your income, the size of your family, and your monthly expenses.
You can apply online through the Department of Social Services (DSS) website, download an application online, have it mailed to the nearest DSS office, or personally drop it off in person.
You can contact the DSS office to ask questions, call the SNAP division at (605) 773-3493 or 1-877-999-5612, or email SNAP@state.sd.us.
TANF Cash Assistance for Single Mothers
As someone who once relied on the TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) program as a single mother, I can personally attest to its immense value. TANF provides essential support to low-income single mothers, covering various aspects of daily life. To begin the application process, you’ll need to visit your local DSS office and determine your eligibility, just as I did. Additionally, the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) office in your area can provide valuable work assistance. For any inquiries or assistance related to the TANF program, you can reach out to the program administrator at the DSS by calling (605) 773-4678 or emailing TANF@state.sd.us.
Medicaid/CHIP
I can attest to the importance of Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP), offered by the DSS as a single mother who has navigated the complexities of healthcare coverage. The eligibility criteria and a comprehensive list of covered services can be found on the DSS website, which was a valuable resource during my journey. To apply for these vital benefits, you can easily do so online or reach out to a local DSS office near you.
Single mothers with children can also apply for CHIP or The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
The program has services for the uninsured or the underinsured. Before applying, you should check your eligibility requirements and apply for this program online.
CHILD CARE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (CCAP)
Another program single mothers can apply for and benefit from is the CCAP or Child Care Assistance.
Being a single mother, I understand the challenges of balancing work and childcare and I can attest to the significance of the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). This program has been a lifeline for many low-income families, including mine.
To access this support, you have several options, such as applying online through the DSS website or downloading an application. If you prefer to speak directly with someone, you can reach out to the helpful team at the Division of Child Care Services at 1-800-227-3020 or Child Care Assistance at (605) 773-7274.
Unemployment Insurance (UI)
Having faced unexpected job loss, I can personally vouch for the importance of Unemployment Insurance (UI) provided by the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR). In times of financial hardship, this program can be a vital safety net for eligible individuals. Filing an online claim is a straightforward process, and you can also reach out to them by phone at (605) 626-2452. If you require further assistance or have questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Unemployment Insurance Division at (605) 626-2301.
Head Start
I understand the importance of quality early childhood education and I’d like to highlight the South Dakota Head Start Association (SDHA) and its impactful programs in our state and local communities. To initiate the application process, simply locate a Head Start office in your area and begin the application process. Alternatively, you can reach out to SDHA at (605) 224-4161 or via email at sdhsa@sdheadstart.org for guidance and support.
LIHEAP
I want to highlight the significance of LIHEAP, the Low Income Energy Assistance Program offered by the DSS. Eligible households can greatly benefit from this support. To begin the application process, you can conveniently download an application and submit it via email to LIEAPApp@state.sd.us or by mailing it to the Office of Energy Assistance. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to them at 1-800-233-8503.
