SNAP provides cash assistance to low-income families, elderly and disabled people in order to purchase the food they require for a nutritious diet. Although anyone can apply for SNAP benefits in South Carolina, it is intended to assist those most in need — low-income families as well as the elderly and disabled as well as those receiving public assistance.
What Is SNAP?

Eligibility Requirements For South Carolina SNAP
To be eligible for SNAP you must meet these eligibility requirements:
- South Carolina Legal Resident
- US Citizen, or a lawful permanent residence
- Show Proof of Identity
- Respect certain income guidelines
- You have less than $2,250 of resources
South Carolina assistance program has no limit on the resources available for SNAP. However, you must be work-eligible beneficiaries between 16 and 59, who aren’t disabled or have children, must register for, search for, and accept work as a condition to their eligibility.
ABAWDs must adhere to special work rules. A violation of these rules will result in benefits being suspended for a maximum of 3 months.
Income Limit For Snap Benefits In South Carolina
South Carolina’s most eligible families have a gross income of at least 130% above the federal poverty level. This is approximately $2,380 per month for a family with three children.
Application For SNAP Benefits In South Carolina
SCMAPP makes it easier to apply for SNAP benefits. This online portal allows South Carolinians and others to apply for these benefits.
You can also print out and complete an application, and send it back to your DSS office. If necessary, you may schedule an interview to determine your eligibility. Your SNAP benefits will automatically be deposited to your South Carolina EBT Card if you are accepted into this program.

Call 1-800-616-1309 to check the status of your request. When calling, be sure to have your case number. You can find your case number in the upper right corner of each notice.
Getting Emergency SNAP In South Carolina
You can only apply for emergency SNAP if you are able to prove you have less income than $150 per month and that you have no more than $100 in cash or in your bank account. You may be eligible for emergency SNAP if you have little to no income. Your first benefits will be available within seven days.
