Where Can I Find Low-cost Dental Care?
Last Updated on January 23, 2024 by Lori Pace
There are many resources available for low-cost dental care. These include local health departments and medical insurance programs. Dental schools and clinical trials are also in the list.
Local Health Departments with Low-cost Dental Care
The Health Resources and Services Administration (1-888-Ask-HRSA) provides support for federally funded community health centers that offer free or reduced-cost services such as dental care.
Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and Low-cost Dental Care
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administers three federally funded programs: Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Medicare
They provide health insurance for those 65 and over or people with special disabilities. Medicare denture coverage is not available. It does not cover routine care. CMS (1 800-MEDICARE), can give you detailed information about these programs and direct you to state programs, if applicable.
Medicaid
They provide benefits for eligible families and individuals. Each state sets its own criteria for who is eligible and which services are covered. While most states offer limited emergency dental care for those aged 21 and over, some provide comprehensive services. For most people under 21, emergency dental services can be provided by Medicaid.
CHIP
assists children under 19 years old who do not have health insurance. CHIP offers medical coverage and dental services in most cases to children who are eligible. The state-specific coverage for dental services under this program varies from one state to the next.
Dental Schools
Dental schools (American Dental Association), can provide quality and affordable dental care. These teaching facilities often have clinics where dental students can gain practical experience while receiving care at a lower cost. Students are closely supervised by licensed, experienced dentists. Many schools also offer faculty and post-graduate clinics.
The American Dental Hygienists Association may offer low-cost, supervised preventive care in their dental hygiene schools training programs.
Clinical Trials
Sometimes, the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research may need volunteers with certain dental, oral and craniofacial conditions in order to participate in research studies. These are also called clinical trials. Participants may be offered limited, free or low-cost treatment for the condition they are researching by researchers.
You can find out if you are eligible for any NIDCR clinical trials by visiting ” NIDCR Study Seeking Patients.” ClinicalTrials.gov has a complete listing of federally funded clinical trials. Call the Patient Recruitment and Public Liaison office at 1-800-411-1222 to find out if you are eligible for any clinical trials at our Bethesda campus.
