Mississippi SNAP (or Food Stamps) offers monthly benefits to low-income households that allow them to purchase the food they need for a healthy diet and sound nutrition.
Every household that SNAP has will receive an EBT card. You can use this c in any participating store with the Quest, or anywhere else that accepts EBT. However, you can only use the SNAP benefits to purchase eligible food and plants that will produce food for the household.
Although anyone can apply for SNAP benefits, the program is there to assist those most in need of food assistance. These are the elderly and the disabled as well as Mississippians who are on public assistance.
What Is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, offers food benefits, access, and education in food preparation and nutrition for low-income households. The benefits, which are a type of ATM card and electronic card, can be used to purchase eligible food at authorized retail food shops.
SNAP is the largest domestic hunger safety net program. Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), a state agency that works with nutrition educators and neighborhood and faith-based groups, ensure that all those who are eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed choices about how to apply and have access to benefits.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for SNAP you must meet these eligibility requirements:
- Mississippi Legal Resident
- US Citizen, or a lawful permanent residence
- Show proof of identity
- Respect certain income guidelines
- You have less than $2,250 of resources
Income Limit For Food Stamps In Mississippi
Mississippi’s SNAP benefits are available to most families with a gross income of up to 130% of federal poverty, which is approximately $2,380 per month for a family.
Application For Food Stamps In Mississippi
You can now apply for SNAP online through the Mississippi DHS website. You can access it in English, En Espanol (Spanish), or Tieng Viet (Vietnamese).
After they receive your application, the local county offices will schedule an interview to discuss your application within 5 days. Most cases will not take more than 30 days to notify you of your eligibility.
